STEW: Tax-Efficient Dividends At An Attractive Valuation

    seekingalpha.com

    2025-09-24 02:24:40

SRH Total Return Fund offers an actively managed, value-driven portfolio trading at a historically attractive 20.6% discount to NAV. STEW has delivered strong total returns and resilient performance during downturns, but underperforms tech-heavy indices due to limited technology exposure. The fund provides a growing 3.6% dividend yield, with payouts increasing at a 9.16% CAGR over five years and distributions structured for tax efficiency.

STEW: Better Off Just Buying Berkshire

    seekingalpha.com

    2025-09-22 17:57:51

SRH Total Return Fund is a concentrated, value-focused closed-end fund with assets significantly concentrated in Berkshire Hathaway while charging a high fee. STEW's high expense ratio (2.28%) and modest distribution make it less attractive compared to more diversified, lower-fee peers like ADX, GAM, and CET. The fund's heavy reliance on BRK.A/B performance and an uncertain post-Buffett outlook raise concerns about concentration risk and future returns.

I know I don't have to tell you this market is “pricey”—levitating from all-time high to all-time high. That's got a lot of investors stuck on the sidelines, too afraid to buy until we get another dip.

STEW: Closed-End Fund That Outperforms The S&P 500

    seekingalpha.com

    2025-07-09 01:42:07

I rate STEW a buy for its strong earnings, solid dividend coverage, and attractive 20% discount to NAV, offering compelling value. The fund's resilience during market downturns, focus on high-quality holdings like Berkshire Hathaway, and consistent dividend growth stand out. STEW's 3.7% yield is well-supported by earnings and tax-efficient distributions, making it ideal for income-focused investors in taxable accounts.

2 Picks For Monthly Distributions And Participating With Activists

Closed-end funds offer unique opportunities due to the structure, which allows for the share price to swing wildly different from the underlying portfolio value. There are activist groups that specifically target these in a way to take advantage of this feature within the closed-end fund space. On top of that, it also provides significant diversification by investing in already diversified CEFs, and additionally, this can translate into strong monthly distributions.

STEW: A Cheaper Way To Own Berkshire Hathaway

    seekingalpha.com

    2025-05-07 05:39:26

STEW is a solid core holding with a large cap value tilt, with about 40% invested in Berkshire Hathaway and about 10% in J.P. Morgan Chase. The fund's locked-in low-cost fixed leverage below 3% is a significant advantage, driving alpha and outperforming peers. STEW's high discount to NAV, currently at -19.11%, makes it an attractive buy, especially when the discount exceeds 20%.

STEW: Another Distribution Bump For This Year

    seekingalpha.com

    2025-02-18 04:49:22

SRH Total Return Fund offers significant exposure to Berkshire Hathaway, with it making up a 38% concentration. The fund's deep discount and more consistent distribution increases could attract some investors, despite its relatively low distribution rate for a CEF. That said, despite the deep discount, activist pressure on the fund is unlikely to materialize due to a significant concentration of ownership.

Closed-end fund discounts/premiums, due to their structure, allow for potential opportunities to capitalize on mean reversion. CEFs also offer relatively higher distribution yields as they leverage their portfolios and payout sources of income, capital gains and/or return of capital. Today, we are giving SPE and PFO a look; these are two funds that, we believe, are attractively valued and provide monthly distribution to investors.

STEW Update: Equity CEF With Low-Cost Fixed Leverage Continues To Perform Well

    seekingalpha.com

    2024-12-10 00:58:40

STEW is attractive due to its 20%+ discount, low-cost fixed leverage, and 4% distribution yield, despite underperforming the S&P 500 recently. The fund's NAV is understated due to accounting rules, with a potential $41.7 million higher NAV if fair market value of senior notes is used. Share repurchases at significant discounts have been accretive to NAV, but the large Horejsi family holdings limit fund activism.
