iShares MSCI EAFE Small-Cap ETF (SCZ)

SCZ is having its best start ever in 2025, driven by strong momentum, attractive valuation, and sector diversification. The ETF offers exposure to developed-market small caps outside the U.S. and Canada, with a modest P/E of 13.2 and a 3% yield. Technical analysis shows a bullish breakout, rising 200-day moving average, and further upside likely, despite seasonal June headwinds.

The Avantis International Small Cap Value ETF actively invests in Value stocks of small-cap companies, within the market capitalization range of the MSCI World ex USA Small Cap Index. The iShares MSCI EAFE Small-Cap ETF has longer history and invests based on the MSCI EAFE Small Cap Index. This ETF invests in both Value and Growth stocks.

SCZ has underperformed U.S. stocks and global stocks. SCZ offers good value relative to other segments around the world.

SCZ invests in international small-caps. The forward return profile is probably circa 10%, which is good, but the fund is too internationally diversified to offer strong out-performance opportunity.

Zinc supply is tight due to higher electricity costs around the world. Investors have not priced in the newly acquired Bolivian zinc-silver-lead assets.

More than $14 billion has flown into dividend-focused ETFs in the first two months of the year, compared to less than $2 billion over the same period in 2021.

For the first month in three, mutual fund investors were net purchasers of fund assets, injecting $44.6 billion into conventional funds for August. Fixed income funds (+$38.9 billion for August) witnessed net inflows for the sixteenth month in a row, while money market funds (+$23.8 billion) experienced net inflows.

During Refinitiv Lipper's fund-flows week ended August 25, 2021, investors were overall net purchasers of fund assets (including both conventional funds and ETFs) for the fifth consecutive week, attracting $2.9 billion. Exchange-traded equity funds recorded $2.9 billion in weekly net outflows.

For the second month running, mutual fund investors were net sellers of fund assets, redeeming $15.0 billion from conventional funds for July.
