New Putnam Dynamic Risk Allocation Fund Seeks to Pursue Total Return Consistency Through Varying Market Conditions

    businesswire.com

    2011-10-04 09:08:00

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Putnam Investments today announced that it has launched the Putnam Dynamic Risk Allocation Fund (Class A: PDREX), designed to actively balance the sources of portfolio risk across multiple asset classes, with flexibility to respond dynamically to changing economic conditions and market valuations, in pursuit of consistent levels of total return. The Fund will make use of a risk parity approach that Putnam has utilized extensively for institutional clients. The Putnam Dynamic Risk Allocation Fund is unlike a traditional balanced fund where the majority of the risk comes from the equity allocation. The new Putnam fund diversifies across a wide range of global markets reducing reliance on equities, to pursue a total return that is more consistent over different market conditions. By comparison, in a traditional asset allocation portfolio or balanced fund (60% equity/40% fixed income as defined by Lipper), the equity portion contributes nearly 90% of the portfolio risk. In addition to conducting a rigorous risk analysis at the individual securities level, the new Putnam Fund will have an intense ‘risk lens’ at the asset allocation level. The Fund will be attempting to create more consistent performance over time by boosting exposure to less volatile and/or less correlated asset classes and diversifying its exposure to risk. “Greater risk diversification across less volatile assets is essential for preservation and long-term growth of investment capital – and pursuing these objectives through a focused ‘risk’ lens can be a critical success factor,” said Robert L. Reynolds, President and Chief Executive Officer, Putnam Investments. Another major distinguishing characteristic of the Putnam Dynamic Risk Allocation Fund is that the portfolio is not static: utilizing the expertise of the Putnam Global Asset Allocation team, the portfolio weightings will be dynamically adjusted in response to changing market conditions, providing the potential to further enhance performance and manage risk. “Building off of our strong work in the institutional marketplace to seek total return with lower volatility than equities, we believe that seeking better risk diversification by asset class currently offered by the new Putnam fund creates the potential for the fund to produce solid performance in a variety of market environments, and as such, should be considered as a strong core holding in many different types of investments portfolios,” Reynolds continued. Reynolds explained that the portfolio management team is accustomed to using a wide array of asset classes and investment tools to thoughtfully approach its investment mission. The fund has the ability to employ a variety of advanced strategies to conservatively control volatility and manage overall risk. In addition to a full spectrum of global equities and global fixed-income securities, Putnam Dynamic Risk Allocation Fund may invest in other asset classes such as commodities and real estate investment trusts, as well as other tools designed to mitigate risk, including the prudent use of leverage. The Dynamic Risk Allocation Fund is managed by Putnam’s Global Asset Allocation team, led by Head of Global Asset Allocation Jeffrey L. Knight. The team’s specialists have more than 17 years of experience in managing multi-asset portfolios for both the institutional and retail marketplaces, including more than five years of managing portfolios employing a risk-parity approach. Beyond their own skills and resources, the team draws upon the knowledge of the larger Putnam investment organization. About Putnam Investments Founded in 1937, Putnam Investments is a leading global money management firm with over 70 years of investment experience. The firm was recently named one of the top 15 mutual fund families by Lipper/Barron’s for the second consecutive year. At the end of August 2011, Putnam had $122 billion in assets under management, including mutual fund assets of $62 billion and institutional assets of $60 billion. Putnam has offices in Boston, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney. For more information, visit putnam.com.

Putnam Investments to Dramatically Strengthen Companies’ Awareness of Employees’ Readiness for Retirement

    businesswire.com

    2011-09-14 09:05:00

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a move designed to better enable retirement plan sponsors to exercise their fiduciary responsibility in helping employees attain more successful financial outcomes in retirement, Putnam Investments today announced that its proprietary Lifetime Income Score SM will be made available more broadly to the defined contribution marketplace. Building off of the ability of Putnam plan participants to view their highly customized Lifetime Income Score – measuring their individual retirement income replacement trajectories – Putnam will now be providing employers with a uniquely dynamic view of how well their plan is working in the aggregate, as well as specific areas of focus to lead to greater plan success. Using its Lifetime Income Score analytics, Putnam will be offering critical plan-level perspective and useful drill-down insight to 401(k) plan sponsors, which can enable them to take a series of actions to help positively influence the retirement preparedness of their workers. Plan sponsors and their advisors will have the ability to review participant readiness by demographic groups to pinpoint those most at risk, develop targeted and measurable campaigns to educate and engage least prepared employees, showcase income calculations at the forefront of participant communications and introduce tools to help participants calculate income goals and gaps – and measure usage. “There is a rising expectation in the marketplace that plan sponsors will take a greater role in helping their participants adequately prepare for retirement,” said Edmund F. Murphy, III, Head of Defined Contribution, Putnam Investments. “To do that, they need to know whether their employees are on track, from a future income perspective, to enjoy a dignified retirement, and how well their plans are working in readying their workers for retirement.” The Putnam Lifetime Income Score plan-level results will be available to 401(k) plan sponsor clients of Putnam and their advisors on an ongoing, real-time basis. All qualified plan sponsors – and their consultants – regardless of their client status, are eligible to receive a complimentary overview assessment if requested. “The name of the game is empowering plan sponsors to focus on ‘guided outcome’ for their participants,” Murphy noted. “The Putnam Lifetime Income Score was designed in large part to address concern among plan sponsors about their workers’ readiness for retirement. Employers will now have an entirely new level of analytics and comprehensive reporting to allow them to benchmark and track their progress, and to ultimately serve as a basis for taking confident action in strengthening their plans.” According to a recent study,* 62 percent of sponsors said that their responsibility includes seeing whether their employees are on course for a comfortable retirement. However, just 18 percent of sponsors have conducted a retirement readiness assessment during the past year. Sponsors feel responsible for ensuring their workers are on track for a secure retirement, but may lack the tools to assess that progress. Focus on Retirement Income Murphy explained that the Putnam Lifetime Income Score approach also addresses a significant shortcoming in financial planning by focusing on monthly income in retirement, rather than on undefined retirement savings balances that often leave individuals in need of broader context and application. “Our Lifetime Income Score re-focuses attention where it belongs: Expected income in retirement,” he said. The Putnam Lifetime Income Score takes a holistic view of behavioral tendencies, demographic and mortality factors, current household income, savings and future contributions from a plan participant’s age today through age 65. The Putnam-developed methodology translates current assets, asset allocation mix, future saving deferrals, company match and Social Security, into estimated monthly retirement income, reflected in an easy-to-understand Lifetime Income Score that helps plan participants know where they stand on retirement readiness. “The new offering to plan sponsors will allow Putnam Lifetime Income Score figures to be rolled up in a meaningful way to allow for targeted guidance and communication to bolster preparedness in areas of need within a participant base,” Murphy indicated. America’s Lifetime Income Score In June 2011, Putnam used the Lifetime Income Score methodology to analyze information provided in a survey of nearly 3,300 working Americans** to determine their current retirement preparedness. The study identified three key variables that drive successful retirement preparation: disciplined, long-term savings and investing (regardless of income level), access to a workplace savings plan and seeking the assistance of a financial advisor. The research, believed to be one of the most comprehensive such studies ever conducted, found that American households are on track to replace an average of 64 percent of their current income in retirement. Many financial professionals recommend that workers seek to replace 75 percent of their current income once they retire. “Clearly there remains a lot of work to be done to help get individuals on a more solid track to replace their current income in retirement,” said Murphy. “We believe that by providing action-oriented tools, resources and information to the retirement savings community, significant inroads can be made to close the existing gap and deliver much stronger outcomes for working Americans.” Putnam Investments and Retirement Since Robert L. Reynolds, a 30–year retirement savings industry veteran, became Putnam’s President and CEO in 2008, the company has deepened its commitment to the retirement market and launched a series of innovations and initiatives to meet emerging customer needs. In recognition of its leadership in retirement savings, Putnam was named the inaugural recipient of the “Retirement Leader of the Year” award at the 2011 annual Mutual Fund Industry Awards. In addition to such initiatives as the Putnam Lifetime Income Score SM methodology, Putnam will also be officially launching a suite of income–oriented mutual funds that aim to help advisors work with retirees in developing strategies for monthly income flows, at varying levels of risk tolerance, to flexibly address their changing lifestyle financial needs throughout retirement. The Putnam RetirementReady® Funds, the firm’s suite of 10 target–date/lifecycle retirement funds, were the first suite of lifecycle funds to integrate Putnam Absolute Return Funds, which seek positive returns above inflation over three years with reduced volatility than has been associated with traditional asset classes that have earned similar rates of return. Employed in retirement portfolios, Putnam Absolute Return Funds*** are intended to pursue positive returns in up and down markets, to help protect against the harmful effects of adverse investment returns and to seek to reduce volatility. About Putnam Investments Founded in 1937, Putnam Investments is a leading global money management firm with over 70 years of investment experience. At the end of August 2011, Putnam had $122 billion in assets under management, including mutual fund assets of $62 billion and institutional assets of $60 billion. The survey of 3,290 working adults age 18 to 65 was weighted to U.S. Census parameters for all working adults. *** Putnam’s Absolute Return Funds are not intended to outperform stocks and bonds during strong market rallies.

When shareholders use their smart phone to scan the code on the front of their statements, it automatically takes them to key sections of Putnam’s Web site, including its “Manager Insights” section (https://www.putnam.com/insights), where they can obtain access to expert commentary from Putnam’s investment professionals on economic and market topics that potentially could affect their mutual funds. “Investors, like most Americans, increasingly rely on their smart phones to access the information they need,” said Michael Woodall, Head of Mutual Fund Shareholder Services, Putnam Investments. “We are committed to enabling our shareholders to access timely, relevant information through every means possible. The new codes are another highly effective way for Putnam to stay in close regular contact with its customers.” By introducing this feature to shareholder statements, Putnam has integrated the traditional paper version of shareholder statements with highly contemporary Web tools and resources. This feature helps shareholders augment the information in their quarterly statements with content available at the Putnam Web site. This feature will seek to encourage shareholders to adopt environmentally-friendly and cost-effective electronic delivery of future quarterly statements, providing faster, more streamlined access to their account information. Putnam uses Microsoft Tag Reader that can be used on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7, and BlackBerry. Microsoft Tag Reader can be downloaded at http://www.gettag.mobi/. Putnam Investments has introduced advanced technologies for use by fund shareholders, their financial advisors and other industry stakeholders. The recently announced Putnam PriceCheck&SaveSM iPhone application, for example, enables participants in 401(k) plans to use their iPhone camera to scan the bar code of most sales items to register price, comparison-shop across other retailers to seek a lower cost, see the potential cost savings in terms of future monthly income in retirement and immediately direct the price differential into their 401(k) account. Customer Service Track Record Putnam has a deep and long-standing commitment to providing excellent customer service to its shareholders. In January, the firm was honored for the 21st consecutive year with a DALBAR Service Award for providing industry leading service to shareholders and financial professionals. The DALBAR Service Award symbolizes the achievement of the highest tier of service to customers within the financial services industry and is awarded only to those firms that exceed industry norms in key service areas. About Putnam Investments Founded in 1937, Putnam Investments is a leading global money management firm with over 70 years of investment experience. The firm was recently named one of the top 15 mutual fund families by Lipper/Barron’s for the second consecutive year. Putnam Investments and the Kraft Sports Group Announce Long-Term Brand Partnership for Gillette Stadium

    2011-07-28 11:38:00

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Putnam Investments and the Kraft Sports Group today announced a multi-faceted, multi-year marketing partnership. The new agreement carries broad awareness-building opportunities with high-profile branding of new and improved properties at Gillette Stadium. By teaming with the New England Patriots, Putnam will also receive significant local and national exposure through various forms of media. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The long-term marketing partnership aligns Boston-based Putnam Investments, one of the nation’s leading investment management firms, with the New England Patriots, one of the strongest and most recognizable brands in professional sports. “Putnam Investments is proud to be associated with the New England Patriots, which has come to signify performance excellence and a winning tradition based on hard work, talent and a passion for teamwork,” said Robert L. Reynolds, President and Chief Executive Officer, Putnam Investments. “Under the inspiring leadership of Robert and Jonathan Kraft, the New England Patriots have earned a reputation for success that is as powerful off the field as it is on. Together, we will make a very formidable team.” Commenting on the new agreement with Putnam Investments, Robert Kraft, Chairman of The Kraft Group said, “Joining forces with elite, New England-based companies as our naming rights partners has been a priority from the time we conceived of building the stadium. I have the utmost respect for Bob Reynolds and his team, who lead a well-regarded global money manager. We are proud and honored that Putnam Investments is our new marketing partner, and look forward to combining our two great brands for years to come.” Reynolds indicated that the new initiative represents the next step in Putnam’s strategic marketing efforts by providing a regionally based, top-tier opportunity that is national in scope. “The broad reach of the National Football League, widely recognized as the nation’s most popular sport, combined with the universal appeal of the New England Patriots, makes this an extraordinarily attractive sponsorship,” he said. Under Reynolds’s direction, the firm has engaged in key talent acquisition to augment existing capabilities, rebuilt Putnam’s equity and research investment platforms, bolstered its retirement business, enhanced its technology and revitalized the brand of the nearly 75-year-old company. Redefining the Fan Experience A key element of the new partnership will be to help redefine and elevate the fan experience through use of leading technology, social media and greater levels of connectivity, which will be wrapped in Putnam branding. The new concepts are a result of the close-working relationship of Putnam and the Kraft Sports Group, and will be unveiled this fall. One of the primary features will be the Putnam Club, consisting of two 60,000-square-foot indoor club spaces which serve as the game-day home of more than 6,000 club seat holders. The Putnam Club will have a highly contemporary look and feel, providing enhanced views of the field from indoors. New high-resolution digital signage will deliver a more informative and entertaining fan experience, while interactive messaging throughout the facility ties the rich history and culture of the Putnam brand with the New England Patriots organization. The Putnam Club is scheduled to officially open in September, when additional details will be announced.
